Parents Should Be Appreciated

Written by: Muoka Chibuzor

Our parents probably are the first God we see on earth. They often take it as a responsibility to ensure that their children enjoy the finest things in life. They will go to any extent to provide for their children and protect them from any form of harm. Even if it entails selling their expensive properties or even clambering the hurdles of life amid tears.

The love of a caring Father and Mother keeps the child going in life till adulthood and beyond. Parents who aren’t buoyant enough, often sacrifice a lot just to see their children become great people in the society. They have played their part and for the children to reciprocate their loving kindness and see them through in old age is a dream they truly anticipate to become a reality.

This appears to be a virtuous cycle across generations, whereby the parents train their children, and in turn, the children grow up to train theirs.
It often becomes so disturbing when the child turns around to ignore the parents after all they have contributed to his/her life. Some children tend to forget everything their parents did for them when they feel they have arrived and are probably sitting on top of the world.

If not foolishness, what could possibly be the answer to the question, how can a young man keep buying cars for his girlfriend but forget to buy a piece of wrapper for his mother who barely has nothing else to wear but torn clothes as she soared through the thick and thin of life to see him become whom he is at the moment?

What of the lady who says he loves him but forgets to ask him, whether his parents are faring fine? If his parents are eating as supposed? All these points to the fact that some children do not appreciate the sacrifices and efforts of their parents when it’s clearly very important that we do appreciate our parents.

Let’s reflect on the story below, which I came across, and of which was from an anonymous writer.

“One day, I was so angry, that I left home, swearing not to return, till I became a big guy.
Parents, who can't even buy me a Bike, have no rights to dream to make me an Engineer.
In my fit of anger, I didn't even realise that I was wearing my father's Shoes.

I even stole his wallet, which had some papers, torn as well, which my mother hadn't seen...
While I was rushing on foot towards the bus station, I realised some prickly pain in my foot. I also felt dampness inside the shoe. That is when I realised the shoe had a hole underneath.

There were no buses around.
Not knowing what to do, I started to look in my Dad's wallet. I found a loan receipt of Rs. 40,000, which he took from his office. A laptop bill (he had bought for me).

To my utter shock, also found a letter from his manager to wear a neat looking shoes, henceforth to the office.
I remembered my mother pestering him to buy a pair of new shoes, but he would convince her that his shoes would last another six months at least.

Also, found “An old scooter to a new bike”, Exchange offer letter in his wallet.
I instantly remembered, that when I left home, my Dad's scooter was not there.
I started feeling weak in my legs, and felt like weeping uncontrollably!

I ran back home with my foot paining, only to find my Dad nor the scooter there. I found him at the exchange offer place.
Looking at my Dad, my grief engulfed me.
I hugged him tightly and started crying loudly, said "Dad I don't need the Bike".

That was when I realized, the pain, hardship our parents go through, and the unconditional love that they give us. “

There is a saying that what goes around, comes around. If you see it as a responsibility to appreciate the efforts of your parents. Then your children will also reciprocate such kind gesture when you attain old age. There are no two ways about it.

We should only look to seek our needs and not our unrealistic wants. Ridiculing parents when they are alive, and despising them when they are not around or old and weary, has only one meaning which is foolishness. You are precious to your parents and so are they supposed to be precious to you.

Most people wished their parents were still alive, if you are lucky to have one or both of your parents still alive at the moment, please do always obey them and make them happy.

One of the commandments of God says –
"Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” - Exodus 20:12

Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” - Proverbs 23:22

Always have them at heart because they are mystically, the only God you see.
