10 Computer Programs and Skills Everyone Should Have

Written by: Madu Victor and Praise Kelechukwu

Many people pay huge sums of money for computer services that they can do themselves and most times has a completely free alternative, people are just simply unaware of these.

I’ve realised that some people do not realise the large amount of powerful and resourceful software that are simply snaps away, so I am going to take a break and highlight most of what I feel are the computer skills and programs everyone should learn or have.

All these are even free.

1. Word processing Microsoft word
Microsoft word is a word processing software that allows users to create and edit text documents.

Microsoft word is an essential tool for any individual in today’s digital age, whether you are a working professional, a diligent student or an active retiree, proficiency in Microsoft word is a vital skill that is useful for both complex business requirements as well as basic day-to-day purposes.

Not only is Microsoft word a flexible tool that allows you to achieve many of your digital document needs, it is also one of the most user-friendly applications from the Microsoft Office suite.

2. Spreadsheet – Microsoft excel
Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet application designed to perform basic and complex mathematical computations and functions. In addition to performing arithmetic operations, Excel allows users to create graphical displays of data, forms and pivot tables.

It is also routinely used to sort information and assist users in identifying data trends.

3. Database – Microsoft Access
Have you ever wondered how you can organise your data or stack inventory? Access makes this task very simple. So many Microsoft office users have this tool but have no idea what it offers, this program and skill will pay off if learnt.

4. Photo editing/ Graphics designing – Photoshop
Photoshop is a raster graphics editor that can also perform the job of graphics design, its primary use is for photo enhancements but can also be used for other designs with manipulations of its inbuilt shape and text tools.

Its learning curve is a bit steep but will surely pay off.

5. Web design – Mobirise
I just discovered a free tool called mobirise for building mobile and responsive websites that’s quite excellent and definitely worth checking out. www.mobirise.com
It’s available for Mac and PC as well as android. The best part is its FREE!

6. Blogging – Wordpress, Blogger

7. Instant messaging – WhatsApp
The most popular smartphone messaging app, WhatsApp is now available for mac and PC. Yes! You can download this at www.whatsapp.com
WhatsApp for computers works more or less the same way that it does on your phone and it synchronises messages across these platforms.

8. Web browser – Google chrome

Chrome has one of the largest libraries of extensions, add-ons and built-in applications that enhance the browser's ability to do what you want it to do.

While Firefox and Internet Explorer boost impressive extensions as well, they cannot even come close to the amount of encouragement Google gives to users to change the way chrome works. It also integrates seamlessly with other Google products like Gmail, YouTube, and Drive etc.

9. Antivirus – SMADAV
Smadav is an antivirus software that protects the computer from corruption in the process of communication with other devices or systems – Smadav has a free version which does most of the job compared to other software.

10. Archiving – 7 Zip
7zip is a free and open-source file archiver, which you can use to compress files into .zip and .rar format.

Bonus: Malware – Malwarebytes
In wraps your browser and software programs in four layers of defence, stopping attacks that use vulnerabilities in those programs to infect your computer.

The combination of using these skills and programs on a daily basis will most certainly make your computer life much more enjoyable, or at least more practical.
