10 Homemade Remedies and Uses of Lemon you never knew

Written by: Ikima Doosuur

Lemon so much more than Just a fruit.

The lemon belongs to the citrus family of fruits. A very acidic fruit that has over time, proved itself beyond its ugly exterior to be more useful in the home than we ever thought.

Below are ten (10) out of many uses of the lemon in our everyday lives.

1. Hair: Lemon can be used to relieve itchy scalp, dandruff and frizzy hair.

Squeeze the lemon juice into your shampoo or conditioner, apply on the damp hair, allow for 20 – 30 minutes and rinse off. (Caveat: do not apply lemon alone directly on your hair as it has bleaching properties due to its acidity and may distort your original hair colour.)

2. Face: Lemon acts a cleanser to remove acne and blackheads. Squeeze the lemon into a small bowl, add a little honey or Aloe Vera juice, and add a few drops of water. You can use both Aloe Vera and honey, in addition to neutralising the acidity of the lemon juice, they are also very good for the skin as moisturisers.

Based on the consistency of your mixture, you can use a face mask for 10 – 15 minutes or with a cotton ball as a cleanser. Always remember to rinse off.

3. Flat Tummy: Lemon Juice works well, in burning fat. Mix lemon Juice, grated ginger and honey to make a fat blasting tea. Mix lemon juice, mint leaf, grated ginger and cucumber in a pitcher of water and leave overnight.

Drink all through the next day. It is effective as well as refreshing. Note: Never take lemon alone.

4. Teeth: Mix lemon juice with baking soda to form a paste. Use an old toothbrush or a Q-tip to apply on teeth. Brush and rinse to get instant whiter teeth.

5. Mouth Odour: To combat halitosis, mix lemon juice in warm water, gargle and hold for a few minutes and the spit. Do not rinse your mouth. Repeat this over time and smell our troubles go away.

6. Sweaty Armpit: To combat sweaty armpits, mix lemon juice and baking soda in a small bowl, the consistency should be thicker than that used for brushing. Apply the paste generously to clean, shaven underarms and allow for 20 minutes then rinse then rinse off.

7. Body Odour: For odours emanating from armpits, use lemon juice as a deodorant. Slice lemon in two, rub one-half of the cut lemon to your clean armpits as you would a roll on, and allow to dry. Dress and be on your merry way.

You would replace the foul stench with a fresh lemony scent even after a hard day’s work.

8. Smelly Feet: Mix lemon juice to warm to mildly hot water, soak your feet in it till the water gets cold. Repeat if desired.

9. Fruits and Meat: Mix lemon juice in the water you use to wash fruits and meat, it works as well as vinegar.

10. Bathrooms: To wash off grime off your bathroom tiles, rub sliced lemon on the affected areas like tiles, taps, sinks and scrub with your favourite detergent.

If you find this tedious like me, you can squeeze the juice into your detergent (I use dishwashing liquid soap, try it and you would thank me later) scrub, allow for a few minutes and rinse off.
